What are Brain Bridge Exercises?
Brain Bridge Exercises are downloadable worksheets created by Dr. Jill Dorman to improve Bilateral Coordination.
What is Bilateral Coordination?
Bilateral coordination is the ability to use both sides of the body together in a controlled way. Bilateral Coordination is essential for childhood development.
Why is bilateral coordination lacking in many students?
In our digital age, many kids spend less time in active play, which is critical for developing bilateral coordination skills.
Do students without strong bilateral coordination skills struggle academically?
Yes, when kids can’t coordinate both sides of their body well, it creates a ripple effect that can disrupt their ability to learn and succeed in school. Bilateral coordination is essential for defining fine motor skills, motor development, and the ability to read.
What grade level are Brain Bridge Exercises designed for?
Brain Bridge Exercises are helpful for students (and adults) no matter the age. These exercises help work the brain by activate the corpus callosum which allows communication between the two hemispheres of the brain. Daily use of these exercises help improve memory, attention and focus, and strengthen cognitive development. There are varying degrees of difficulty with the exercises making them enjoyable for all ages.
How can we strengthen bilateral coordination in our students?
Using these brain bridge exercises 5-10 minutes a day can significantly improve coordination making fine motor skills more developed and helping students be able to read fluently. (Reading from left to right is a bilateral movement).
