Data Faces for Getting to Know You Activity

ree

Looking for a new way to gather data on students without them even realizing you are collecting data to get to know them? Have you tried data faces? I learned this activity over 27 years ago when I was taking my methods Math class in college. Essentially, you work together with the class to make a set of faces that represent each child in the class. For example, the nose on the class data set may stand for the way a child gets to school. If they come by bus, there nose would be a triangle. If they come by car, the nose would be a circle. If they walk to school, their nose might be a lightning bolt.

Students discover what symbols to use by looking at the key provided by the teacher. When you finish, everyone's face looks different which is a create time to also talk about differences and how everyone is special in their own special way. The directions for this activity and customizable google slides are available in my TPT store located at Thrifted Wisdom | Teachers Pay Teachers

I often would hang these in the hallway for other students to try to decipher using the key. Sometimes I would laminate them and make them into a class book that students looked at often. What other get to know you activities do you do with your students?
